Human wellness depends greatly on nutrient and dietary diversity and hence, in turn on diverse ecosystems and the biodiversity they harbour. Biodiverse ecosystems and local health traditions are also important for social–ecological resilience. Our growing dependence on too few foods is making our diets less diverse and in turn, making social-ecological food systems less resilient.

A reset is required; a food systems transformation, one that will address all three dimensions of health – human health, societal health (livelihoods) and planetary health. Understanding how food system transformations can translate into nutrition-dense practices, equity and livelihoods, and positive environmental outcomes is crucial, to guide sustainable use of resources for food.

In this symposium, we are drawing upon experts to share their views on the concepts and insights from a wide range of disciplines and experiences, to tackle the complexity and diversity of influences in our food choices - from personal to community level to policy level.

The symposium aims to define the efforts that are needed to develop food first solutions to nutrition, livelihoods and environment challenges through a multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral approach.
