Prof. A. V. Balasubramanian

A.V. Balasubramanian, a leading voice in Traditional Indian Knowledge Systems, was awarded a D.Litt by TDU in 2021 for his pioneering work in Vrkshayurveda and revitalizing India’s medical heritage through research, publications, and farmer-led initiatives in sustainable agriculture

A V Balasubramanian has contributed for over twenty five years, to the understanding, popularisation and the promotion of various aspects of Traditional Indian Sciences, Technologies and Knowledge Systems. He has been aprolific writer and  has published  scholarly articles as well as popular articles, books and manuals on varied themes , including – Traditional Agriculture, Ayurveda, Vrkshayurveda, Local Health Traditions, Food and Nutrition ,Yoga and Traditional Metallurgy and Metal working, as well as the methodology and Epistemology of Traditional Knowledge Systems. He has also been  on the Editorial boards of many journals and magazines on these themes.

His work in the area of Vrkshayurveda ( Traditional Indian Plant Sciences ) includes a series of books, users manuals and monographs on the  practical use of Vrkshayurveda in agriculture. He has been involved in organising a large number of training programmes to popularise the use of these practices among farmers in Tamil Nadu state. He has also  been engaged in research projects for the testing and validation of various recipes and methods of Vrkshayurvedleading to the development and use of  field tested solutions for plant protection as well as the development of storage forms of biopesticides and plant growth promoters and seed treatment.  These have resulted in packages of practices for the cultivation of various crops based on Vrkshayurveda as well as the setting up and promotion of farmer owned  enterprises for the production and supply of biopesticides. He has developed research collaborations with several research institutes and universities creating a wide  awareness and appreciation about our indigenous knowledge traditions.

This D.Litt is being conferred on  of A V Balasubramanian in recognition of over two decades long contribution to the Revitalization of India’s Medical Heritage and specially for his pioneering work in the field of Vrkshayurveda.
