Learn about Ayurveda and Life Sciences together in PG Diploma in Ayurveda Biology

Our unique M.Sc. Life Science (Ayurveda Biology) program spans four semesters over two years, providing a comprehensive curriculum that combine score courses in contemporary biology with foundational knowledge in Ayurveda. It merges fundamental concepts in molecular biology (genetics, biochemistry, cell biology) with the profound insights of Ayurveda (medicinal plants, pharmacognosy, Ayurvedic principles for drug discovery and dietetics). Theory is complemented with experiential learning.

The first year consists of theory, field trips, discussions with experts and practical laboratory courses. The second year allows you to develop skills specifically for your next career move in industry, clinic or research through course work and an 8-month dissertation project.

For those with a medical background interested to complement their training with biomedical concepts and laboratory work, the first year offers an exit option resulting in PG Diploma in Ayurveda Biology.

What is Ayurveda Biology? How do I study it through PG Diploma in Ayurveda Biology?

Ayurveda Biology seeks to deconstruct ayurvedic concepts with contemporary knowledge science and apply ayurvedic frameworks to improve our understanding of biology. This program equips students with a trans-disciplinary approach: blending laboratory-based science with perspectives from botany, pharmacology, and molecular sciences. This diploma is part of our signature program M.Sc. Life Sciences (Ayurveda Biology).

Whether you dream of delving deeper into clinical specializations, tackling public health challenges, or venturing into research and entrepreneurship, TDU's diverse PG courses equip you with the knowledge, skills, and network to become a leader in the evolving world of Ayurveda.

Choosing TDU's PG Diploma in Ayurveda Biology after your BAMS is a strategic move offering numerous advantages and opening doors to diverse career paths. Here's how this unique program can offer you more career options:

  • Explore if research in Ayurveda is what appeals to you. If you continue with an M.Sc. degree, you can even think of going abroad for higher studies.
  • Be more confident about explaining Ayurvedic science to your patients. For clinicians, communicating information to the patient is an important task. Patients might ask you how a particular ayurveda medicine works or the reason for your lifestyle advice. This course will teach you fundamentals of biomedicine so you can explain using modern terms to your patients.
  • Develop skills to read medical journals and basic science research articles so you are always up-to-date on clinical science. BAMS and MBBS courses focus on knowledge transfer and practice, not on how the knowledge was generated. This course will help you understand how drugs were discovered, their mode of action and open questions in biology which impact treatment.
  • Join Ayurveda clinical research setups in institutes or hospitals. Use your training and experience with us to be uniquely qualified for research fellow positions in various clinical trials across the country.

This course is the closest Ayurveda graduates can take if interested in M.Sc. Biotechnology related subjects

  • Seek mentors, not just teachers: Look for a faculty composed of renowned scholars, practising clinicians, and active researchers. Will they challenge your thinking, guide your research, and provide valuable industry insights?
Our faculty comprises renowned scholars, practising clinicians, and active researchers, each dedicated to guiding your academic journey and igniting your research passion.
  • Small groups, big impact: Prefer small interactive classes or large lecture halls? Does the college offer personalized mentorship, guest lectures from industry experts, and opportunities for independent learning?
TDU's intimate class sizes ensure personalized attention, interactive discussions, and the opportunity to learn from your peers' diverse perspectives.
  • Beyond the textbook: Explore the college's infrastructure for extracurricular activities. Are there student clubs, research forums, and opportunities to interact with practitioners from diverse AYUSH disciplines?
At TDU, guest lectures from industry experts, student clubs, and research forums create a vibrant learning environment that extends farbeyond the classroom walls.

I am from a medical background, how will this help my clinical practice? Will I lose my clinical skills?

This course will build your skills in laboratory based science and bring in perspectives from botany, pharmacology and molecular sciences that are not part of typical medical courses. This course cannot be seen as a substitute for an MD, but is a lateral move to learning and doing science with a trans-disciplinary approach. Physicians who wish to continue to practice can do so outside of class hours, at their own discretion. Further, we would encourage physicians to design dissertation projects that involve clinical research, to build their skills in areas that are important to them.

I am from a B.Sc background. Can I join this program?

Yes you can apply for the full time, 2-yr MSc Life Sciences (Ayurveda Biology)course. UGC rules do not allow 3year-BSc scholars to exit with a diploma.

I am a working professional and would like to join an online course. What are my options?

In the past, we have offered short 15-hr sessions to Ayurveda physicians to learn more about microbiology, cell and molecular biology from a modern biomedicine background. However, with an increased investment in our Master’s program these short courses have been put on hold for the time being. Please check our events page for other short-term courses on offer. For the time being, the MSc course is expected to be offline and in person.

Is this course recognised by UGC?

TDU is a UGC approved Karnataka State Private University. This approval provides the authority to offer degree courses. The syllabus of this course is primarily tailored according to UGC recommendation for an MSc degree in Life Sciences. Papers on Ayurveda have been included to provide a specialisation in Ayurveda biology that will integrate modern biology and Ayurveda.

How will I be unique in the job market after this degree?

This course is one of the few in India to offer a mix of modern science and Ayurveda biology at the PG level. Hence, a graduate in this degree would be uniquely qualified for industry positions that require training in both sciences which spans from drug discovery to food science. Further, as India moves towards an integrated healthcare model a greater need for human resources that are trained in modern biology and traditional medicine can be foreseen.

Can I compete for PhD positions in India?

To be a competitive candidate we recommend that you apply for the 2-yr M.Sc. Life Sciences (Ayurveda Biology) program as the PG Diploma might not be sufficient training.
