Prof. Bhushan Patwardhan
Professor Bhushan Patwardhan, distinguished scientist and thought leader, was awarded the D.Litt by TDU in 2026 for his pioneering contributions to evidence-based Ayurveda and integrative health sciences.
Citation
Professor Bhushan Patwardhan has made sustained contributions to advancing the scientific study of Ayurveda in dialogue with contemporary biomedical science. Over four decades, his transdisciplinary scholarship has brought together pharmacology, genomics, systems biology, and public health, contributing to evidence-based integrative approaches to health. He has developed innovative research approaches including Ayurgenomics, Systems Ayurveda, Reverse Pharmacology, and Network Pharmacology, integrating ancient insights with modern scientific discovery. He has led extensive investigations on medicinal plants, particularly Ashwagandha, Guduchi, and Shatavari, elucidating their therapeutic potential in addressing challenges related to immunity and inflammation.
Prof. Patwardhan is a highly cited author who has published widely in international journals and authored scholarly books. He has served as advisor to several policy-making and scientific bodies, including the Ministry of Ayush, the World Health Organization, the Lancet Commission, and national research councils. He has also contributed to improving the quality of higher education and promoting academic integrity and research ethics within the Indian university system. Through scholarship, institutional leadership, and public engagement, he has strengthened the scientific foundations and global recognition of evidence-based Ayurveda.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to science, education, and society, we proudly confer upon Professor Bhushan Patwardhan the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.).
