Dr Rakesh Basnett
Dr Rakesh Basnett a wildlife conservation professional and researcher working with the Forest & Environment Department, Government of Sikkim. My work focuses on wildlife ecology, Human–Wildlife Conflict, biodiversity conservation.
Dr Rakesh Basnett a wildlife conservation professional, researcher, and graduate forester with the Wildlife Circle, Forest & Environment Department, Government of Sikkim. Dr Rakesh Basnett hold a Ph.D. from NERIST, Arunachal Pradesh, where my research focused on the ecology of the Asiatic Black Bear and human–wildlife conflict in and around Khangchendzonga National Park, Sikkim. Dr Rakesh Basnett have an M.Sc. in Wildlife Science from the University of Kota and a B.Sc. in Zoology from Sikkim University. Dr Rakesh Basnett have been involved in wildlife research and conservation since 2011, with extensive field experience in wildlife monitoring, community engagement, biodiversity documentation, GIS-based analysis, and human-wildlife conflict assessment. His research interests include wildlife ecology, human–wildlife conflict and coexistence, Indigenous ecological knowledge, community-based conservation, and biodiversity conservation in the Eastern Himalaya.
Dr Rakesh Basnett a wildlife conservationist and researcher with a strong interest in understanding the relationship between people, wildlife, and the landscape. His professional journey has been closely associated with wildlife research and conservation in Sikkim, particularly the study and management of Human–Wildlife Conflict.
His doctoral research on the Asiatic Black Bear provided me with extensive experience in field research, ecological data collection, community interviews, conflict assessment, GIS mapping, and understanding the socio-economic dimensions of wildlife conflict. Through this work, Dr Rakesh Basnett developed a strong interest in finding practical solutions that address both wildlife conservation and the needs of local communities.
In my present role with the Forest & Environment Department, Government of Sikkim, Dr Rakesh Basnett involved in wildlife management, biodiversity conservation, field surveys, research coordination, community engagement, and conservation planning.
Dr Rakesh Basnett strongly believe that successful conservation requires collaboration between scientific knowledge, government institutions, local communities, and Indigenous Ecological Knowledge. My goal is to contribute towards a future where people and wildlife can coexist in a sustainable and mutually beneficial way.
