Akhila George, Project Fellow in Coexistence Studies at TDU, explores coastal commons and fisher knowledge systems, bridging ecology, community knowledge, biodiversity, and conservation practice.
Akhila George is a marine biologist trained in Zoology and Marine Biology, with a strong interest in coastal and marine socio-ecological systems. Her work focuses on understanding the connections between people, marine ecosystems, and coastal livelihoods. Currently, her research explores coastal commons, fisher knowledge systems, and the relationships between coastal communities and marine environments. Through participatory and community-based approaches, she documents traditional ecological knowledge and its role in supporting coastal ecosystems and livelihoods. Her work brings together ecology, community knowledge, and conservation, highlighting the importance of local perspectives in understanding environmental change. Her interests include fisheries, marine ecology, biodiversity conservation, environmental education, local livelihoods, and craft-making traditions. She is committed to linking scientific research with community knowledge to support inclusive conservation and the sustainable management of coastal ecosystems.
