June 6, 2025

On June 6th,The University of Transdisciplinary Health Sciences and Technology (TDU) brought together bright minds, green hearts, and eager hands for an inspiring World Environment Day celebration on campus. Events of the day focused on sustainable living and planetary wellbeing, the day blended rich academic discourse with hands-on environmental stewardship, also discussing theme of the year, End Plastic Pollution.

The event started off with the inaugural address by the Vice-Chancellor Sri Darshan Shankar, speaking about the evolution of plastic, emphasising that each small step make a difference and urging everyone to do their best to avoid and reduce plastic.

A series of thought-provoking talks by esteemed scholars that sparked meaningful reflections was the highlight of the day. Dr. Subrahmanya Kumar, Associate Professor in the Ayurveda Biology and Holistic Nutrition Group at TDU, opened the session with “Alternatives for Endangered Plant Drugs Using Ayurvedic Concepts. ”His talk illuminated the urgency of preserving traditional medicinal knowledge while exploring sustainable, non-endangered botanical alternatives rooted in Ayurveda.

Following this, Dr. Simenel Romain, Visiting Faculty at TDU, delivered a captivating interdisciplinary narrative, “Nature-Based Ingénierie: From DaVinci to AI.” With a blend of science, history, and innovation, his presentation spotlighted how nature has inspired both the genius of the past and the algorithms of the future.

The final speaker of the day, Dr. RavikantG., Senior Fellow and Convenor at ATREE Academy, took the stage with “Species Distributions in a Changing Climate.” He offered a sobering yet insightful exploration of biodiversity shifts amid climate change, reinforcing how local actions are tied to global consequences.

Beyond the intellectual spark, the day was rooted in earthy action. Students and staff joined hands to plant over 5 GI tagged speciality species of Karnataka Appemidi Mango, Coorg Orange, Devanahalli Chakota, Mysore Jasmine and Nanjangud Rasabale in the lush TDU campus, each one a living emblem of the university’s commitment to conservation action.

In a powerful closing gesture, TDU staff took a pledge to eliminate single-use plastics from their daily routines and all campus events—an everyday act of defiance against plastic pollution and a step toward a cleaner, healthier future.

From learning to doing, thinking to planting, TDU’s celebration reminded everyone that healing the Earth is both a scholarly pursuit and a lived practice.
