Indian Medical Heritage Day – 19 February 2026

TDU celebrated Indian Medical Heritage Day on 19 February 2026. This special occasion commemorates the birth anniversary of His Highness Sri Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar and honors his deep admiration and steadfast support for India’s rich medical heritage.

Since 2016, TDU has been commemorating this day with the continued support of the Royal Family of Mysore, reflecting a shared commitment to preserving and promoting India’s traditional systems of medicine.

The 2026 celebration was graced by the esteemed presence of Her Highness Smt. Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, who continues the family’s long-standing patronage and encouragement of India’s medical traditions.

As part of the celebrations, two distinguished laureates - Padma Shri 2026 Awardees  were felicitated for their exceptional contributions to Indian medicine:

• Prof. Punniyamurthy Natesan – Recognized for his significant contributions, particularly in the field of ethno veterinary practices and traditional pharmacology.

• Dr. Padma Gurmet – A prominent scholar and practitioner of Sowa-Rigpa, the traditional Himalayan system of medicine, whose tireless efforts have played a vital role in preserving and promoting this ancient knowledge system.

To ensure that India’s medical heritage is not only preserved but meaningfully transmitted to future generations, TDU organized:

A Campus Tour for students of the Poorna Learning Centre was organised. The objective is to provide hands-on exposure and cultivate awareness among young minds about the depth, relevance, and scientific richness of Indian medical systems.

The celebration reaffirmed TDU’s commitment to safeguarding India’s medical heritage while inspiring the next generation to appreciate and carry forward this invaluable legacy.
